It has been just over a year since the COVID-19 pandemic forced Amendment 39-18 (2018 Edition) into effect, and we would like to remind everyone utilizing the IMDG Code for your vessel shipments that this extended validity expires on May 31, 2022. From June 1, 2022, Amendment 40-20 (2020 Edition) is the only valid Amendment of the Code authorized for use through December 31, 2022. The pandemic caused a myriad of changes that still affect the shipping and logistics industry to this day, and this new Code Amendment is just the latest chapter in that story. The good news is that IMDG training to comply with these changes is available online and can be completed at your convenience!<\/p>\n

What is the IMDG?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The International Maritime Dangerous Goods<\/a> (IMDG) Code is a comprehensive set of regulations developed by the United Nations for the transport of dangerous goods by sea. The code is mandatory for all countries that are party to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), 1974, as amended.<\/p>\n

What’s New In Amendment 40-20<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The 2020 edition includes significant changes and additions, including:<\/p>\n

  • New and revised provisions relating to the classification, packing, labeling, placarding, and marking of dangerous goods<\/li>\n
  • New and revised provisions relating to the handling, stowage, segregation, and transportation of dangerous goods<\/li>\n
  • Amendments to various schedules and lists in Annexes A, B, and C<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Amendment 40-20 also includes language about the use of the IMDG Code in a “harmonized” manner with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) new Regulations on the Carriage of Containers by Sea, which will come into effect on January 01, 2024.<\/p>\n
