Multimodal Air & Ground Online Hazmat Training

Employees that are involved in the processing of hazardous materials for transportation in commerce typically may not have responsibilities that encompass dealing with more than one mode of transportation.  Multimodal training can include air, ground, and/or vessel.  Therefore, hazmat employees are required by Federal and international regulations to undergo training within each mode. However, depending on the nature of their employment, certain hazmat employees have duties and responsibilities that extend across more than one mode for shipping dangerous goods. Employers must provide their employees with multimodal training in the applicable modes of transportation before those employees can begin performing their duties and working with the hazardous materials / dangerous goods in any capacity.

Hazmat University provides online training for each mode of transportation respectively and combined. For employers and employees involved in more than one mode of transport, we provide online multimodal training options, including Multimodal Air and Ground Training. The modules from the separate courses for Air and Ground Training are combined to provide a comprehensive multimodal training program for both Air and Ground, at a lower cost than if you purchase the courses separately. If your responsibilities extend across shipping by ground and shipping by air, you can successfully complete the required 49 CFR and IATA training with our online multimodal option.

This multimodal training course provides the required initial or recurrent training to participants involved with the shipping, handling, and/or transport of dangerous goods by ground and by air. Multimodal Air and Ground Training is based on the requirements outlined in Title 49, Code of Federal Regulations (49 CFR), International Air Transport Association Dangerous Goods Regulations (IATA DGR), and the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Technical Instructions. Training for shipping hazardous materials by ground was developed based upon the requirements outlined in 49 CFR.

Included in this course at no additional cost are General Awareness and Security Awareness.

Multimodal Training Course Objectives

At the end of the course, participants should be able to:

• Properly classify or understand the classification requirements of substances and articles according to their proper hazard class
• Assign or verify the assignment of substances and articles to an appropriate identification name and associated UN number
• Select or verify the correct packaging for the dangerous goods being shipped and understand applicable packing requirements
• Select or apply the correct marks, labels, and placards for the material being shipped
• Accurately complete or verify the shipping paper (shipper’s declaration for dangerous goods) requirements for the transport of dangerous goods by air and the applicable requirements for an air waybill, as well as the shipping papers required for the transport of dangerous goods by ground as outlined in 49 CFR
• Understand the requirements for security, safety, and emergency response as they relate to shipments of dangerous goods by air and ground as required by the appropriate national and/or international authorities
• Understand the rules and procedures to be followed for segregation of hazardous materials
• Download and print a certificate of training upon successful completion of the course

Multimodal Training Primary Audience

This multimodal training course is intended for shippers, freight forwarders, and hazmat employees involved in the handling, shipping, and/or transport of dangerous goods by air and ground.

This multimodal training may also be applicable to personnel of Federal departments and agencies, such as government contractors, military armed forces personnel, and civilian subcontractors that are involved in shipping and transporting hazardous materials.
