Multimodal Training

Summary

There are several employment opportunities in which a hazmat employer hires a hazmat employee to deal with the shipping and handling of hazardous materials / dangerous goods that may require their employee(s) to be involved in more than one type of transportation process. To give an example, if a hazmat employee is involved in the handling and offering of hazardous materials for transportation by ground and that same employee has the additional responsibilities in assisting in the handling of the hazardous materials to be shipped on an aircraft, they may need to know the regulations for air transport in addition to ground transport. This would require the employee to undergo training for both modes of transport.

This employee could fulfill the requirements for certification by completing training for one of the modes of hazardous materials transport, then undergoing and completing a separate training course for the other mode. However, not only does Hazmat University provide training for each individual mode of transport, but it also offers options that combine training for two or more modes into one.

With multimodal hazmat training, hazmat employees can undergo both Initial and Recurrent courses for each of our main modal training programs: IATA (ICAO) Shipping by Air, 49 CFR (DOT) Shipping by Ground, and IMDG (IMO) Shipping by Vessel. These training programs can be taken in any combination. This includes taking all three courses at once.

If you select a multimodal hazmat training option, you will still be presented with every module that you would have to see if you had taken the training courses individually. This means learning everything that hazmat employees need to know about the dangerous goods regulations that apply most to the modes of transport for which they are undergoing training, including the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR), the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code, and Title 49, Code of Federal Regulations (49 CFR).

The modules in the multimodal hazmat training options also cover all functional areas of training prescribed by the regulations. This means they provide the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding proper classification, identification, packing, marking and labeling, documentation, and placarding, as well as safety and emergency response information.

Not only is nothing lost from choosing to undergo multimodal hazmat training, but you can actually save money by choosing to take courses which combine transportation modes, as opposed to taking them separately. The price of a multimodal training course that combines training for two modes of transport is lower than the combined price of two single mode courses that offer the same training. The same applies to the price of a multimodal training course that combines training for all three modes of transport versus the combined cost of single mode courses for those three modes. This translates to a significant savings for hazmat employers.

If you are involved in the shipping and handling of lithium batteries, it is highly recommended that you also purchase our Supplemental Lithium Batteries Training, which is available in this store.
